A bunch in the face for Binissalem grape growers

featured in News & reviews Author Nicola Henderson, Site Editor Updated

The local residents of Binissalem celebrated the annual Festa des Vermar today with a grape battle. Enthusiastic participants launched themselves into the fight with great gusto, and proceeded to quickly resemble the grey-brown limey soil that the vines themselves grow in. Not dissimilar to the rather more famous Tomatino Tomato fight in Bunyol, this grape battle has been part of the celebrations of the grape harvest for many years.

The Festa des Vernar is an annual nine-day harvest festival that this year is being held from 11th to 26th September. The events include street bands, open-air celebrations, a wine treading contest and a wine tasting contest. The final day sees a concert in the main square and all are invited to drink wine from 16:30 in the Placa de la Iglesia and enjoy the Binissalem giants accompanied by the xeremiers. The festival has a traditional lamb dish - Fideus de Vermar - a rich and delicious lamb and pasta dish also known as grape harvest noodles that is best served (of course) with a glass of Binissalem's finest.
