Booming August for hotels & car hire in Mallorca

August has been a bumper month for the tourist industry in Mallorca. Visitor numbers are similar to those in 2007 and local businesses are in agreement; 2011 seems to be the best holiday season since the start of the crisis.

Hoteliers across the island say bookings this month have exceeded forecasts and demand is such that a small number of rooms, in three and four star hotels, have been let for up to 300 euros at weekends. Hotel prices were reduced by between 20 and 25 per cent this year in a bid to woo potential holiday makers back to the island and the strategy seems to have paid off.

Similarly car hire companies are said to be thrilled by the current levels of business. Although the president for the industry, José Maria Blay, pointed out that significant investment was required earlier in the year to boost fleet numbers and satisfy forecasts for the peak season. Naturally they are now hoping demand continues into September and October.

In fact industry watchdogs say the overall success of the 2011 season across the Balearics will depend on bookings for the coming month.
