Heavy rain in Mallorca

Yellow risk weather alert for Mallorca with heavy rain & storms

featured in News & reviews Author Jane Leitch, Mallorca Reporter Updated

Heavy rain has pummelled the usually sunny and warm island of Mallorca last weekend, so much so that the Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has put Mallorca under a yellow alert warning (some risk of damage) for rain and costal storms. Rainfall is set to be around 25mm/hr today with coastal storms and an adverse weather forecast for many parts of the island.

The heavy rain has come from the north, making Mallorca much colder than is seasonally expected. There were flash floods across the island on Friday with flights from Palma airport being grounded for an hour or being diverted to Menorca. Flights are operating as normal today but rain still persists on some parts of the island.

October tends to be the wettest month in Mallorca but when the rain hits it all comes at once rather than lingering over a few weeks. So usually there are a lot of sunny days (temps around 23 degrees) which can be interupted by heavy rain for a couple of days, and then it goes back to sun.

Despite the wet weather, Mallorca's traditional autumn fair season has begun, with successful events in Llucmajor and Algaida this weekend. With plenty more fairs coming up and the school half term holidays beginning, we are all hoping this storm is the last of the bad weather for this October and that the sun makes a speedy return.
