A massive influx of tourists visiting the beach resorts of Magaluf and Platja de Palma in August have set a new record for holiday makers coming through Mallorca's Son Sant Joan airport. Last month 3 491 556 passengers travelled to Mallorca coming through the international airport.

Mallorca was Spain's third busiest airport behind Madrid and Barcelona with numbers nearly double that of the fourth place airport, Malaga. Although the other Balearic Islands have been enjoying increased numbers of visitors compared to last year they are nowhere near Mallorca's numbers. Ibiza has catered to 1 142 547 passengers while Menorca transported 563 542 holiday makers to their destination.

The increase in airport traffic doesn't seem to be slowing down in the first three weeks of September either. As a result of the increased traffic at the airport the number of tourists visiting Platja de Palma and Magaluf has risen and exceeded expectations. According to Francisco Marin, president of the Hotel Association of Platja de Palma and is counter-part in Calvia, Sebastien Darder, there has been a large surge in last minute bookings in these areas and that in some cases there are over-bookings.
