Pharmacists in Mallorca give government more time to pay debts

Pharmacists in Mallorca voted not to strike at an extraordinary general meeting, held yesterday morning. The action was to be taken in protest at non-payment of bills by the government health authority.

The decision to postpone planned closures was made in the interests of the Balearic community. Pharmacists have agreed to give the government more time to pay the monies owed. In return, they expect to see a concrete payment plan.

Outstanding bills for May and June amount to nearly €30 million euros. In the meantime pharmacists have continued to source and supply prescription medicines, with some reportedly taking out credit to enable them to pay their suppliers.

Pharmacists stressed that if the government continues to default on payments there is a real risk that medical supplies will start to run out.
