Pollensa's Roman Bridge at Risk

Development plans made endanger this special area

One of the better known landmarks in the north of Mallorca, the old Roman bridge at Pollensa, has always been a popular photo spot for hikers and holiday makers. It is now threatened as the municipality of Pollença plans to build a settlement around the landmark, and local residents fear development of the landscape around the bridge will not be sympathetic.

The original plan was in place for construction in 1990, however the owner of the land next to the bridge was not in agreement and therefore the building did not go ahead. Now the municipality wants to allow the area as construction zone, whilst still retaining an area of Green Zone.

The opposition party "Alternativa by Pollença" criticised a lack of urban planning sensibility by the City Council and states that it is the area where up to 20 residential units could be built are going to be on an area at risk of flooding.

Let's hope that whatever decision is made, that this fantastic relic of Roman times will not be affected.
