There has been an increase of illegal property lettings in Mallorca this summer according to the Ministry of Tourism and Finance. The economic crisis has meant that many people with second homes on the coast have been renting them to tourists rather than holidaying in them themselves.

As the homes are not registered, the government believes that the income received from the let will not be submitted for taxation. In Mallorca, owners must obtain a license from the government before they can legally rent their property.

This summer has seen an increase in the number of visitors flying into Palma Airport but the number of hotel occupancies has not seen similar growth. The increase in residential tourism has been huge and it is estimated that more than 40% of visitors to the Balearics stay in private residences rather than using registered tourist accommodation. In Mallorca 2.8 million visitors stay in residential accommodation while 7.7million use traditional hotels and apartments for their stay.
