Thomas Rempe - Owner & Manager at Mallorca Watersports Centre

Meet the man who can make you swim like a dolphin!

featured in Meet the locals Author Ellie Mahoney, Mallorca Editor Updated

There are so many things to do in Mallorca, aside from the usual sunbathing, swimming in the sea, dining out and chilling out watching the amazing sunsets. For the more adventurous out there Mallorca, offers a plethora of adventure sports, one of the newest (and I have to say the coolest looking) is flyboarding.

Set up a couple of years ago by brothers Thomas and Martin Rempe, Mallorca Watersports Centre offers you a unique experience to dive in and out of the water, James Bond jet-pack style, giving you the feeling of swimming like a dolphin while your friends watch from a nearby boat. We had a quick chat with Thomas, the guy who brought Flyboarding to Mallorca, to find out a bit more about what they do and what their plans are for the future.

Flyboarding, Cala Nova (Mallorca)

A watersports company in Mallorca

Tell us a little bit about your business, how it started out and where you're based.
Onwater Flyboard Mallorca started in 2012. We think that "OnWater-Events" need specialists due to the element of the water. Our whole team grew up or has a close affinity to the water, either as an instructor or OnWater-Event Manager. Since 2013, we specialise in flyboarding, a brand new water sport for everybody. We organise group events, stag trips and company events, all related to water activities. Based out of Port Calanova, we operate mainly on the south-west coast of the island.

How long have you been in your current role and how long have you been with the company?
I started the company together with my brother Martin in 2012. He is the "OnWater-Event" manager.

What makes Mallorca a special place to be for someone in your profession or in general?
I like the seasonal set up so we have time for optimisation and upgrading during the winter. The island is surrounded by water. We are always finding new, nice spots to go to with groups either on a boat trip or on a stand-up paddle trip.

What are the best bits about your job?
Meeting so many people and see their happy faces when they are with us on the water.

And the worst bits?
Spanish bureaucracy!

What is in store for the future with your business, any exciting projects in the pipelines that you can share with us?
For this summer we are going to fly with three flyboards at the same time, which means more action, more fun and more people getting the chance to do it. And we invented an easy start system so the first steps are even easier.

What are your personal and professional goals for the future?
We want to establish "OnWater-Events" in Mallorca and not to run a beach-based business, chasing customers down at the beach. It's all about the group spirit and not the ego trip. As the whole team is totally keen on water we are going to start more water-based activities like sailing, kite-surfing, stand-up paddle boarding and wake-boarding.

Flyboarding, a fun new sport

Fly-boarding is pretty unique, how did it start?
It was invented by a French guy named Zapata. The way we do it is pretty unique because we make it a group event for friends and families.

And how popular is it around the world now?
Flyboarding is still in its infancy although it's getting bigger and bigger every year.

What do people need to remember to bring when they come to Flyboard?
We provide everything needed - all equipment plus drinks and a lot of fun. Just come in your beachwear.

What's the best thing about the experience?
Flyboarding itself is a lot of fun. in combination with the fact that you can take pictures of your friends while they flyboarding makes it unique. Everybody remembers the first time raising out of the water like Superman or swimming like a dolphin.
