Meteorologists have issued a 'yellow' level heat alert which will continue into the weekend with temperatures of up to 36-37 degrees expected.

The previous average temperature for the month of July is a cool 30 degrees, and so far this July the average temperature is sitting at around 33 to 36 degrees. Night time temperatures are still not falling beneath 20 degrees with humidity being close to 90% - making for a very uncomfortable nights sleep!

According to Spanish State Meteorological Office AEMET, this is currently the hottest July since records began. This news follow the announcement from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the United States (NOAA) on Tuesday, who published figures for June and have declared it the hottest June ever recorded on the planet. The main 'record breaking' areas were the western USA and parts of South America, Africa, central and south east Asia. Records began in the late 19th century.

Residents are as always being warned to stay safe during this time and the official advice is to keep cool, drink water regularly, take showers, close curtains and shutters during the day and air the house in the cool morning.

In addition, the recommendations are to drink 3 litres of water per day for adults, avoid alcohol and stay out of the sun as much as possible. Pretty tricky on your summer holiday!
