Adverse weather conditions cause havoc in Mallorca

Gale-force winds have pummelled the island over the weekend

This weekend Mallorca suffered heavy winds and islanders were put on alert to take care in these advese weather conditions. Evidence of the strong wind was apparent as a large palm tree was knocked down along the Palma seafront and beach umbrellas were blown away at Ciutat Jardí.

Wind speeds were highest in Bunyola and Capdepera at 103km/h and 102km/h respectively whereas in the north, Sa Pobla and Pollenca recorded between 73km/h and 77km/h. Cold wintery temperatures also joined the strong winds as a cold front passed over Mallorca.

Temperatures have ranged from 10 degrees inland in Manacor to as low as 3 degrees in the mountains. It is expected that nighttime temperatures will remain low but during the day the temperatures should get a bit warmer.

The snow on the mountains that fell two weeks ago thanks to cold temperatures has now melted and rivers are very fast flowing - including the Ses Font Ufanes aquifer that only flows during heavy rain a few times a year.

The winter season usually runs from December - February in Mallorca and temperatures can range rapidly from mild, sunny almost springlike days to cold winds and foggy evenings. For more information please see our page on Weather in Mallorca.
