Deep in the Tramuntana mountains in the west of Mallorca, archaeologists Jaume Deyà and Pablo Galera have made an important discovery.

An Islamic settlement from the late 12th or early 13th century has been excavated in the area around the beautiful lake of Gorg Blau.

At first it was thought that it was a simple, single dwelling, a place to hide away from the rival Christians of the time, but further excavations have unearthed a substantial town. There is evidence of urban planning with many townhouses, several Islamic buildings including a mosque, a cemetery and skeletal remains.

The archaeologists think that the settlement area covers 60,000 square metres, but with 70% of the town being under water, making definitive conclusions is tricky. Their investigations will continue for the next few weeks until the water levels begin to rise for the coming winter months.
