Cliff jumping warning at Cala Varques

featured in News & reviews Author Nicola Henderson, Site Editor Updated

A spate of injuries have occurred this summer from individuals jumping off the cliffs at one of Mallorca's most beautiful unspoilt beaches. Cala Varques is on the east coast of Majorca, just to the south of Portocristo, and is surrounded by jaggy cliffs, some of which are used by rock climbers for deep water soloing.

There have been a number of accidents this summer, including five incidents during the past week, where people have jumped off the cliffs into the sea and fallen badly, injuring their backs. Emergency services have had to come to the rescue, to take these individuals to hospital. The most recent incident involved the rescue of an American tourist, who had to be helicoptered to hospital in Palma as paramedics were concerned that a rescue boat could cause further injury.

A lifeguard has been employed on the beach at Cala Varques and there are signs stating the danger of cliff jumping. The coastal police are asking everyone to take heed and to refrain from cliff jumping.

The majority of the incidents have involved tourists who may not be experienced in jumping into tidal seas. The funnel shape of Cala Varques means that the tide can be fierce, and the waves gather strength as they approach the coast.
