Home-made device explodes in Palma de Mallorca

Over 50 police officers cordoned off the Placa d'Espanya in Palma de Mallorca yesterday afternoon after a device exploded. The blast came from a rubbish bin located next to a news stand in the busy square. Two people were treated with minor injuries as a result.

Police sources said the device was assembled from fireworks and a distress flare. Eyewitnesses saw a man dressed in black with a white cap drop something into the bin and hurry away. Police are trawling through CCTV images to look for further evidence.

Peaceful protesters, dissatisfied with the economic situation, have been demonstrating across Spain since mid May. And, whilst the Madrid gathering has now dispersed, those in Mallorca, located in Palma's Placa d'Espanya, are still active. The group, who are against any form of violence, were quick to deny any involvement with the blast. Although one protester said he feared the explosion was designed to encourage the demonstrators to pack up and leave the square.
