Mallorca proposes new names for Palma and Magaluf

Change of names to boost recognition and revamp

It seems that there are plans to change the names of some of Mallorca’s most well known destinations.

Three hundred million Euros of private money has been pledged to rejuvenate the resort of Magaluf and the plan is to build new four and five star hotels, luxury apartment complexes and commercial centres.

While the Mallorcan council is fully supportive of this move there has been some concern that the new hotels and shops will be somewhat incongruous in comparison to the image that Magaluf currently has. The idea has been proposed that Magaluf should be renamed in an attempt to give the resort a complete overhaul. The local community is apparently supportive of the idea which was raised at a recent council meeting and one name has already been put forward; Nova Calvia.

Elsewhere on the Island the Balearic MPs have voted to change the capital of Mallorca’s name from Palma to Palma de Mallorca. The move has been taken as there are many “Palmas” and the Mayor, Masteu Isern, wants Palma de Mallorca to be individual.

“We do not need to give the city a surname for the locals but I believe we do for the international community overseas. I think this will make it easier for foreigners to identify with, especially when searching for information about the city.”

So in future you may land in Palma de Mallorca and then visit Nova Calvia or, if I have my way, you’ll land in James Fisher International Airport and spend your holidays in Penelope Cruz-ville, where everyone will look like the Spanish actress.
