Michelin stars have been awarded to two new Mallorcan restaurants in the new edition of the Michelin Guide to Spain & Portugal. 'Gadus', in Cala d'Or and 'Zaranda' in Llucmajor have both been recognised by the revered gastronomic guide and are now the proud owners of one star each. They join Tristan (Puerto Portals), Es Raco d'Es Teix (Deia), and Es Moli d'En Bou (Sa Coma) who all retain their one Michelin star. 'Plat d'Or' in Palma lost their one star in the new edition.

Gadus specialises in creative Mediterranean cuisine under the French chef Thierry Enderlin. It is currently undergoing refurbishment and will reopen in 2011. Zaranda was recently relocated from Madrid where it had already gained a Michelin star, into luxury hotel Sa Torre. Chef Fernando Pérez Arellano creates Mediterranean and international cuisine in a stylish yet relaxed dining room.

The Michelin Guide reviews and rates top restaurants and their chefs with a ratings system, awarding one to three stars for level of service and quality of food. Gaining a star is considered the pinnacle of professional achievement for many chefs and the restaurant can become a destination in it's own right. One star is defined as 'very good cuisine in its category', two-stars are 'excellent cuisine, worth a detour' and three stars mean that the restaurant is considered to have 'exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey'.
