Maria Anotnia Munar sentenced by court in Majorca

Palma court gives former President of Consell de Mallorca five years

Yesterday, the former President of the Consell de Mallorca, Maria Antonia Munar, was sentenced along with six others for fraud and embezzlement. The Consell de Mallorca is the autonomous governement council that governs the island of Majorca and the defendants were accused of misdirecting public funds and giving up two grants worth €120,000 to an audio visual company.

It took weeks for section II of the Provincial court of Palma to reach a conclusion but nearly twenty years in prison sentences were handed out to seven of the people accused in the case, with two acquittals.

As a result Munar has been sentenced to five and a half years in prison for embezzlement, prevarication, fraud and falsifying documents. As well as the prison sentence she will be expected to pay a fine of €54,000.

The other individuals involved in the case have be sentenced to between one year three months and five years.

Miquel Nadal, the former vice president of the consell will face two years and seven months behind bars as well as a €36,000 fine.

Margarita Sotomayor, the former director of communications for Mallorca council will receive a five year sentence.

Alfreedo Conde, manager of a media communications company, will receive a three year prison sentence.

Almiñana Luisa, Ramon Miquel and Oliver Rullan executives of U Video, each received one year and three months as this was their first offence.

Michael Sard and Victor Garcia were acquitted.

All the sentences can be appealed to the Supreme Court. Maria Munar has already said that "The judgement is based on the lies of other defendants." and that she will appeal.
