No Mallorcan premiere for the film 'Cloud Atlas'

Change to structure of official bodies means the producers are owed a government subsidy

The premiere of Cloud Atlas, a blockbuster film featuring Tom Hanks, Halle Berry and Hugh Grant is unlikely to have it's European premiere in Mallorca as previously hoped.

The Balearic Government was to pay a subsidy of €150,000 to the film producers who had agreed that the film would be premiered here. However, the Balearic Government has struggled to pay this and as a result the premiere will be held elsewhere.

The closure of Mallorca's Ministry for Tourism because of lack of funding has resulted in the demise of the Mallorca Film Commission. This has lead to the Government struggling to pay the subsidy and could result in a bleak outlook for future TV and film projects on the island.

The replacement to the Mallorcan Ministry for Tourism is a privately funded body which does back the Mallorcan Film Commission but does not have immediate co-operation from local institutions and authorities who can help make filming easier, such as arranging road closures and security.

It isn't all bad however, as the president of the Mallorcan Film Commission has had a meeting with Pinewood Studios and Palma Pictures to discuss opening an overseas branch of Pinewood Studios here on Mallorca. Mallorca is a great filming destination and projects shot here include award winning TV show Mad Dogs and this summer Pierce Brosnan was here filming A Long Way Down.

Soller was used as one of the filming destinations for Cloud Atlas for the segments set in 1849, 2144 and the post-apocalyptic 24th century. The film is due to be released in the UK and Spain on 22nd February 2013.
