Son Bosc golf course to be built next to Albufera

The construction of the Son Bosc golf course on land next to Albufera Natural Park in Alcudia, has been approved by the Balearic Parliament. This is despite the government having approved a different plan to classify the land as an 'Area of Natural Resources' and to incorporate it into the existing natural park.

The golf course proposal was voted in by the Mallorcan Unionist and Partido Popular parties, but was not supported by the Bloc coalition and the Balearic Socialist party. It was claimed that the project was of 'regional public interest' and that they were required to abide by the municipal construction licence which had already been granted for the golf course.

Great efforts to protect the land from the planed golf course has come from conservation group SEO/Birdlife, who had appealed to Partido Popular and Mallorcan Unionist parties to reject the proposal. The conservation group had asked them not to support the project as the land is home to native species of flora and fauna.

The conservation group feel it will destroy the area which is classified as having important ecological value, and have pointed out that the land was already marked for integration of the Red Natura 2000 nature protection network.

The Balearic government had already started procedures to incorporate Son Bosc in the Albufera nature reserve, by enlarging a wildflower protection zone by 64 metres to extend from Albufera park to the zone of Son Bosc.
