The new eco tax could affect millions of holiday-makers as they arrive for their summer holidays in 2016.
Plans are underway by the islands' government to introduce the tax that will see a daily fee of €2 per person, meaning the average family of four would end up paying an additional €112 on a two-week holiday.
The green, or eco tax, will also be charged to residents living on the islands, in a bid to help conserve the environment on the islands of Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. The total number of people living permanently in the Balearics is around 1 million, with 14 million tourists visiting each year.
It is believed the levy will fluctuate depending on whether it is high or low season, the type of accommodation holidaymakers are staying in and the age of those being taxed. No details have yet been released on the finer details of amounts, or a timeline, for the planned tax.
Fred Isaac, of the Consumer Action website said, "This will hurt families the most, and they already face inflated prices during school holidays. An extra £80 (€112) is a significant charge for those on a tight budget."
