Son Fornes Archaeological Museum, Montuiri

Visit the museum and dig site for Talaiotic remains

featured in Sights & sites

Discover how Mallorcans lived in prehistoric times in this archaeological museum, where you can see the results of excavations carried out on the site of Son Fornes.

The museum is housed in an 18th-century flour mill and is close to Montuiri, in the centre of the island, and the dig site (Son Fornes) is located 2.4 kilometres away. It is best to visit the museum first as there is little information at Son Fornes itself.

The exhibition shows the results of an excavation in 1988. Visitors can find out more about Mallorca's prehistoric origins in the 10th century BC through to the island's Roman conquest in the year 123 BC.

Visitor comments

  • "The museum is very informative about all periods in Mallorca. The texts are in Castilian and Balearic, but you can get a translation in English and German (and perhaps also other languages). Very kind staff. See the museum before you visit the site "Talaiot Son Fornés" (and do remember, if you are searching for a talaiot site on Google maps, you need to write "talaiot" in front of the name)" - Trip Advisor
  • "Son Fornes is a superb Talaiotic site and the nearby archaeological museum in Montuiri is the essential starting point for anyone wanting to know more about Pre/Post and Talaiotic culture. Great little museum in an old mill at edge of the town and a really knowledgeable and helpful curator. Highly recommended." - Trip Advisor
  • "The visit is essential if you want to know the wonderful world of the talaiots and Balearic prehistory. Spectacular site and the restoration work is unique in Mallorca. Museum extremely educational for children. The Museum staff are very polite and charming" - Trip Advisor
