Over 1,900 people have registered to participate in Mallorca's first Ironman event, which takes place in Alcudia on 14th May. Sponsored by Thomas Cook, the triathlon is technically a half Ironman or a ‘70.3' event. This reflects the total distance, in miles, covered by the athletes over the course of the race.

The swimming course is 1,900 metres and will take place in the harbour where the water temperature is expected to be between 18 and 20 degrees celsius. The bicycle course, 56 miles in total, takes athletes up into the mountains and the race culminates with a 13 mile half marathon with the finish line back in the harbour. The professionals will begin at 8.00 a.m. with the different age  groups setting off at ten minute intervals thereafter. The categories range from 18-24 to 70 years plus.

Mallorca has long been recognised as a training paradise for cyclists and triathletes and this qualifying race for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship will no doubt boost its reputation further.
