An eye on cyclists

featured in News & reviews Author Shirley Roberts, Mallorca & Soller Correspondent Updated

With the Mallorcan Challenge cycle race upon us from 6th to 10th Feb, now is a good time to promote some caution on the roads for our two-wheeled friends. February is a popular time for cyclists to visit us and this year, teams have come from England and Germany to train. Riding in groups on our narrow roads, cyclists display varying degrees of etiquette.

There are the well-trained, highly-visible cyclists who observe all the rules and travel in single file to allow cars to pass… and then there are the others – those who scatter themselves all over the road causing irritation to the drivers that follow them.

Majorca has its main motorways but the majority of journeys are made by people on one-lane roads where cyclists can cause mayhem. My advice to February visitors is to bring plenty of patience with you when driving amongst our very welcome cyclists. Most are just fine but the untrained groups weaving their way round our roads don’t need horns blared at them to make things worse – a little patience all round please.
