Blow for Mallorca as airport unions announce Easter strike action

Unions representing Spain's airport staff have announced that they intend to strike on Wednesday 20th & Thursday 21st April, 24th April (Easter Sunday) & 25th April (Easter Monday), and Saturday 30th April. The unions are concerned about the governments plan to semi-privatise the airports, as there have been no guarantees that jobs will not be lost.

In addition to the easter dates, the unions also announced dates during the summer that they intend to strike. These are the 2nd, 14th, 15th, 19th & 20th May, the 13th, 23th and 30th June, the 1st , 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 15th and 31st July, and the 1st, 15th and 31st of August.

Mallorca's tourism industry is understandably disappointed in this decision by the airport workers as the most imminent strike action falls in the middle of the Easter holidays and travel disruption will deter potential tourists from visiting Majorca at this time. A 24 hour wildcat strike by the airport workers in December created chaos for several days and left passengers stranded at airports.

All parties claim to be keen to negotiate, and the unions say they will only strike as a last resort. But no talks have yet been arranged between the government, the unions and the Spanish airport authority AENA.
