A 24 year old local man from Manacor has died whilst free diving with his father in the area between Cap des Freus and Cala Mesquida, on the north east coast of Mallorca. The accident happened on Sunday morning when the father and son took a boat from Cala Rajada out a mile and a half to sea to practice spear fishing. The son was undertaking a dive when he apparently lost conciousness and did not return to the surface.

The father alerted the emergency services, and the Maritime Guard and Civil Guard launched an immediate search for the missing man. His body was found 20 metres from the surface on the sea bed. An autopsy is being performed to discover the exact cause of death. It is thought that he suffered some health failure, causing him to lose conciousness.

The east coast of Majorca is popular with divers (both SCUBA & free diving) and snorkellers thanks to it's clear waters and the abundance of small shallow coves along the coastline.
