Free wifi zones now extend to Mallorca's beaches

featured in News & reviews Author Nicola Henderson, Site Editor Updated

Palma City Council has launched three new wifi zones around the beaches of Palma - in Cala Major, Cala Estancia and Ciudad Jardin. These join the existing free wifi zones of Plaza Juan Carlos I, Parc de Levante, S'Escorxador Flassaders and the Cultural Center. In addition, the service is available in 24 public libraries in the city.

The council are aware of the importance of the internet for both residents and visitors, and are keen to have as many areas as possible to have access to this technology. With the increase in popularity of smart phones, i-Pads and netbooks, the demand for internet access will only rise over the coming years.

With a connectivity of up to 300 MB per second, thousands of users can use the service simultaneously. Once in any of these zones, wifi users will be able to connect to the City Council website and will find a welcome page in Catalan, Spanish and English containing basic information on Palma and the wifi zone in question. Users are limited to 30 minutes of airtime before being disconnected, although you can log back on to the system to gain another 30 minutes. The system is monitored by the managing company, so that certain types of website are blocked, and downloads are also limited.

Free wifi zones are available throughout the island of Mallorca. Mallorcawifi.com has compiled a list of hotspots on its website - simply enter your destination in the 'Poblacion' field, and search using the 'buscar' button.
