Government criticised over lack of tuna reserve in Balearics

A report issued by conservationist organisations earlier this week says the Spanish government has been negligent in its failure to create a bluefin tuna reserve in Balearic waters. Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, Ecologists in Action, SEO Birdlife and the World Wildlife Fund have joined forces to put pressure on the government.

Entitled ‘The Planet Can't Wait', the report touched on a number of issues, including nuclear power and waste management. Whilst the government was given credit for protecting marine birds, sharks and anchovy stocks, their fishing policy came under fire.

The Spanish fishing industry relies heavily on subsidies and the government is criticised for having a short term view on the problem. Conservationists argue that protecting blue tin tuna now would secure stocks for the future, benefitting the industry in years to come.
