The government has today issued a warning regarding the heightened risk of forest fires this summer. The official danger period for forest fires runs from May 1st to October 15th. The first serious fire to break out this year was on 17th April in Capdepera. A total of 70 hectares of land were destroyed before the fire was brought under control.

A government official said that the risk will be high throughout the Mediterranean this year given the lack of rain during the spring period. Residents of the island are reminded that fires in forest areas should be avoided. Cigarette butts should not be thrown from car windows and care should be taken to ensure barbecues are properly extinguished.

As in 2010, a budget of 9.2 million euros has been allocated to the cause. This includes a team of 400 people, two cargo planes, four helicopters and a network of 26 surveillance towers.
