New Greenway Replaces Stalled Mallorca Tram

New Plans for the Train Line Between Manacor and Arta

The Mallorca Train-tram from Manacor to Arta, which has been on hold for six years and was halted indefinitely in 2011, is to be replaced by a “Greenway”.

The original plans were for a Train-Tram system that would link Manacor to Arta passing through the towns of Sant Lorenc and Son Servera but economic difficulties meant that the plans were put on hold . Now, after two years of inactivity the line that the train would have followed is to be converted into an “Environmental Path” that will be used by cyclists and walkers.

The Trams which were to be used on the Manacor - Arta line have already been put to use running from Palma to Inca and now the Government is looking at a plan to salvage the land prepared for the tracks

The new project aims to transform the unfinished works into an attractive walk way for outdoor enthusiasts. The track will run for 28.6km and will cost 5.5million Euros over the next two years. Work still remains on the Greenway with benches, bike racks and garden areas needing to be built and 24 000 square metres of woodland needing to be reclaimed.

It seems like an ambitious project, especially since the Government anticipate that the Greenway will be completed for next summer, but anyone who has visited New York's High Line Park will know what can be done with a disused railway line.
