The change in tourism laws in Mallorca have allowed developers to secure investments from the government to build and renovate hotels and resorts in areas across the island.

The new law has reduced the level of bureaucracy with regards to planning permission and developments. Three resorts in Mallorca will be undergoing work that will begin in late 2012 or 2013.

Plans by the Viva Hotel Group, in conjunction with Calvia Council are looking at an investment of €144m in Marina de Magaluf, with the focus of the investment in 2013 being on improving roads, electricity cables and piping. Of the €144m investment, they hope that four hotels in the area will be developed, producing a total of 2000 suites between them. A further 400 apartments are also to be built after 50 residential houses are created in the area. Hotel chain Viva Hotels are waiting for planning permission from the municipal council of Calvia for the final go-ahead but are confident that construction will begin in 2013.

This investment in Magaluf has driven the local council to attempt to rename the area as Calvia Beach Resort. Last year saw the Melia Hotel Group renovate six establishments, and included the creation of Nikki Beach which was opened this summer. Renovationsand completion of the Wave House Hotel and Beach House Hotel will also take place and will include a 150 room extension to the Beach House Hotel.

The smaller resort of Canyamel in North East Mallorca, near Cala Ratjada will be home to a new luxurious 5-star resort development. Cap Vermell Hotel Projects and Developments Ltd. will be in charge of the development in a five hectare area and will be working with the US hotel chain Hyatt. The Park Hyatt Cap Vermell development features a five-star hotel, 55 exclusive villas, a golf club, an exclusive beach club, spas and restaurants. The developers are awaiting planning permission from the Consell de Mallorca but plan to begin in late 2012/ early 2013 and estimate that the work will take two years.

In South East Mallorca, the coastal town of sa Rapita will potentially see the build of a new hotel, however, planning permission has been delayed. There has been strong opposition from environmentalists and the nearby natural beach area of es Trenc, which has prevented Blau Hotel group from getting started.
