New rugby ground opens in Calvia

A brand new all-weather, floodlit synthetic turf rugby pitch has been officially opened in Son Caliu, Calvia. It forms part of new sports complex that the local council has invested in to improve the sporting facilities in the area and encourage local usage. The pitch will also be available for touring teams from the UK and further afield for training purposes and tournaments.

Mallorca was recently promoted as a rugby destination at the World Travel Market in London, where sports tourism was top of the agenda as one of the fastest growing sectors in the industry. Agreements were made with companies to organise and promote rugby on Majorca, and two tournaments were scheduled. These are an Easter 'Club XV Tournament' to be held 23-24 April 2011, and a 'Veterans XV Tournament' for the 28-29 May 2011. These join the already established and very popular 'Beach Rugby Tournament' that has been held for the last three years and which returns on 30 April - 2 May 2011. It is thought that these events will bring more than 40 teams from all over Europe to Mallorca. Additional tournaments for womens, youth and mini rugby are also being planned, and both league and union will be catered for.

Mallorca rugby is being championed by two British ex-rugby players, John Rule and Paul Galle, and to find out more about rugby on Majorca, you can send them an email, or take a look at their website.
