1,959,127 people - both residents and tourists - were present in the Balearics on the 8th August this year, which has beaten all records for the highest number of people on the Islands in a single day.

The number of people is almost double that of the Islands normal population which is around 1,114,119. Approximately 24,000 of these are thought to be British expats.

This Human Pressure Index was conducted by the Balearic Institute for Statistics. The last survey they undertook recorded 1,889,078 residents and tourists in the Balearics on the 10th August 2011. Although 70,094 less than this years figure, both of these past two years are record breaking numbers.

The huge number of people is largely due to this years fantastic tourist season, as visitors to the islands have resulted in more hotel bookings than last year. The number of tourists this year allowed hotels to extend their summer season by two weeks in October.

A record number of passengers travelling to and from Palma's Son Sant Joan airport has also meant that the main beach resorts have not had an occupancy of lower than 90% during the season from June to September.

The population figures for Mallorca were last recorded in January 2011, when it was found that the population was 873,414. Of these, there were 187,752 non-Spanish residents, and of that, there were 14,896 residents of British descent.
