Renoir cinema in Palma de Mallorca to close

End of an era for art house cinema showing films in English

The Renoir cinema is to close its doors after entertaining cinema goers for some 15 years.

Located in the s’Escorxador district of Mallorca’s capital, it shows an excellent selection of foreign films, a number of which are in English.

The decision apparently comes after eight years of losses. The owners said the situation was unsustainable and that they simply had no other choice. The likely closing date is mid-May.

In 2012 digital cinema is expected to overtake celluloid globally – a step change brought about by 3D film Avatar in 2009. The Renoir estimated it would have cost them 100,000 euros per screen for the upgrade. Meanwhile, an increase in home viewing of films via the internet has led to a downturn in numbers.

The move comes just a few months after the Metropolitan, in neighbouring Pere Garau, shut down, meaning multiplex cinemas now dominate in Majorca’s capital.
