Return to late night shopping this summer in Palma

The president of AFEDECO, the business association for the Balearics, has confirmed a return to late night shopping in Mallorca's capital this summer. The central shopping areas will be open late on Thursdays from 7th July. Originally trialled back in 2009 the initiative was also repeated last year.

Other sights and attractions, including art galleries, museums and the cathedral, will also extend their opening hours.

Meanwhile the polemic regarding Sunday opening continues. Smaller businesses have raised concerns that only larger stores would benefit from such a move. Bernat Coll, the president of the small to medium sized business association, met with the newly appointed Commerce councillor last week to discuss ideas to boost business. Keen to benefit from cruise tourism, the association is proposing a range of shopping routes for cruise passengers. Currently only 10% of passengers disembarking choose shopping as an activity, with most opting for an organised trip of the island.
