Severe Rainfall in Mallorca

Flooding in Mallorca as Balearics are hit by heavy rain

featured in News & reviews Author James Fisher, Mallorca Video Reporter Updated

A huge downfall of rain caused flooding in many parts of Mallorca yesterday when a storm with 80mph winds hit the island.

Although the storm was forecast many people seemed unprepared for the amount of water that fell. In Andratx on the south west of the island 50 litres fer square metre fell in just fifteen minutes and the road from Andratx to Estellencs was closed last night due to landslides.

Firefighters, Police and the Civil Guard were overwhelmed by the number of calls made and were called out to deal with fallen trees and cars trapped by the high waters. Ultima Hora reported that a victim was suffering from hypothermia after being trapped in a water-filled car and another report came in of a person being hit by a falling tree. In Santanyi four people had to be rescued from their cars after they were swept up by the water.
