Smoking ban sparks interest in smokers clubs

The national smoking ban came into force on 2nd January and has resulted in Mallorca's businesses contemplating the idea of creating smoking clubs within their existing establishments. The proposal envisages sealing off a room for smokers that would utilise a 'lazy susan' rotating tray to serve food and drink, allowing staff to remain on the non-smoking side of the bar or cafe.

Bars, cafes and restaurants in Mallorca are reporting a sizeable downturn in takings over the past 12 days, with some establishments experiencing a decrease of 20% of client numbers. If the losses continue, they say it is possible that some staff will lose their jobs.

The proposal, drawn up by the Restauranteurs sector of small to medium sized businesses, will be reviewed by central government next week, who have 15 days to issue a response.

In general, the ban has been obeyed with only a handful of individuals flouncing the new law. The smoking ban has also led to an increase in sales of outdoor heaters as businesses try to cater for their smoking clientele. However, this has also led to more complaints by local residents about increased noise late at night.
