Soller council to renovate the old Fantasio cinema

Plans in place to convert the disused building into a new cultural centre

Soller council have announced plans to renovate the old Fantasio cinema into a new cultural centre with a 400 seater auditorium.

In 2006 there were plans to open a music school in the Fantasio cinema, however a large investment of €2 million was needed in order to transform the space, and this never came to light.

In 2007 the council signed a contract with hotel promoters Sa Talaia to set aside €1 million to be used either in the renovation of the Fantasio cinema or the Defensora theatre, also in Soller. The Defensora theatre would have required a much larger, outsourced investment, but councillor Carlos Simarro (who inspected the Fantastio yesterday) concluded that €800,000 would be enough for the renovations they have in mind and therefore this is where the money is likely to be spent.

The main plan for the cinema is to extend the stage area and create a multi-purpose facility capable of hosting theatre productions, concerts and film screenings.

The Fantasio cinema renovations are the most recent plans for large scale development in Soller, following on from the Nova Fabrica building that we reported on in January.

Timescales for the project have yet to be released.
