Spanish airport strikes called off

Unions have called off proposed strikes in August after reaching an agreement. The industrial action would have caused chaos in Palma de Mallorca's airport and across the rest of Spain, at the height of the summer season.

The strikes were proposed after four employees at Barcelona's El Prat airport were made redundant. Following talks the baggage handling company has agreed to reinstate them.

The first strike, on 18th, would have coincided with Pope Benedict XVI's visit to Madrid. Over a million people are expected to travel to the capital for the event. The second was planned for 26th, traditionally one of the busiest days of the year, when tourists return home after their holidays.
