Vilafranca de Bonany is famous throughout Mallorca for its melons, you'll spot them hanging in strings from doorways and shop fronts all over town. Each year, the village celebrates its most-loved crop with one of the first harvest fairs of the autumn season, filling the Plaça Major with colour, noise and a very competitive melon eating contest.
Alongside the main event, there's live music, exhibitions, artisan markets, parades and plenty of other local produce to sample. It's a wonderfully authentic slice of rural Mallorca, and a great reason to head inland for the day.
