Storm causes fires and flooding in Andratx

Big storm hits Mallorca causing flooding

featured in News & reviews Author James Fisher, Mallorca Video Reporter Updated

The Mallorca summer heat wave came to an end yesterday evening when a storm hit the island bringing heavy rain, thunder and lightning as well as flooding in some areas on the south west of Mallorca.

The storm came to the island a little after 6pm and brought with it the first real rain in Mallorca since May, but lasted less than an hour. There were no real problems in Palma but in the beach resort of Calvia and the nearby town of Andratx there was some localised flooding and lightning strikes caused fires that were followed by huge hail stones. Although the emergency services received 734 calls there are no reports of any accidents or injuries as a result of the storm.

The storm covered the whole island according to the Meterological Agency (AEMET). The forecast indicates that there is more rain on the way over the next few days but it should be clearing by the end of the weekend.

Yesterday's rain was something of a blessing in disguise. Although it sent people running from the beach seeking shelter the air this morning is cooler and a lot less heavy. The heatwave that had been making life sticky and uncomfortable over the last few weeks here in Mallorca seems to have come to an end and when the sun comes back we will be enjoying temperatures in the high twenties to mid thirties rather than the sweaty forty degrees we've been experiencing lately.
