Soller: film, lights and location

The Inbetweeners film in Soller

featured in Sights reviews Author Shirley Roberts, Mallorca & Soller Correspondent Updated

Under the layer of clothes needed to live in Soller at the moment we all hibernate. Scarves, gloves, thick coats and boots are the fashion of choice and necessity. Not too many people are worried about their image - they just want to be warm.

Anyone not wrapped up causes a bit of interest and consternation about their well being. Except, that is, if you are on a photo shoot and want to announce to the world how famous, trendy or just plain cool you are. The photographers and stars doing a pre launch for a German film strutted their stuff round town this week. We all watched the interaction between the lovelies as they took over the warm spot in the Café after coming in from the cold in their impossibly tight, thin, t shirts and jeans. I know that image is everything but all I could think was that they would be catching their death of cold. It must be the granny in me.

The locations around Soller are used often for filming and we are used to the sight of huge trailers doubling as dressing rooms. The catering trucks set up their tables at the side of the road and the constant supply of food is mouthwatering. Last year Soller was one of the locations used for filming of the Inbetweeners and it filmed the worst that Soller has to offer. There is a derelict hotel called the Rocomar situated on the approach road to the Repic beach. This has been left to rot over the years and is an eyesore that every incoming politician has tried to do something about. It is a wonderful film location if you need run down and seedy which this film company obviously did. It was great to walk past there each day with the dog. The scene added interest to our route from mountain to sea. Often we would be stopped by a man with a megaphone while a bit of filming took place. Then 'cut' and we were allowed on our way again. This building is due for demolition this year and it will be the film industry's loss. Sollerics will breathe a collective sigh of relief as the bricks fall and the blot on the landscape is removed.

Snow White and her Seven Amigos is the must see performance of this weekend. The Bay Entertainers annual pantomime is an unmissable date on our calendar. A little bit of England comes to the Sa Societat Theatre in Calvia for four performances. The talent is a combination of some of the funniest English eccentrics on the Island and the lovely children of the BIS school. Directed by the infamous Graham Wesson this annual pantomime has achieved cult status and is eagerly anticipated. We leave the hidden valley and take a forty minute drive to Calvia to get our annual fix of mayhem and innuendo. Nothing better on a snowy Sunday in Mallorca than to see our friends making us all laugh for a charitable cause. This year's performances finish on 12th February 2012 but do look out for them this time next year – you won't be disappointed.
