The British tour operator Thomas Cook has decided to create a new airline with its base of operations set in Palma de Mallorca airport. Called Airlines Balearics, it will fill the void generated by Monarch's collapse last month.

Three to seven Airbus A-320 aircrafts, which used to serve Thomas Cook's base in Belgium, will be rehomed in Palma's airport. Mallorca has been chosen as the perfect spot for the new airline's headquarters as it is one of the most-sought-after destinations from other European areas including Germany, the UK and Scandinavia. Airlines Balearics will operate year round.

Palma is Spain's second airport in the number of passengers using low-cost airlines with 4.3 million travellers from January to September, a 12% of the country's total. Over a million of Thomas Cook's clients fly every year to Palma.
