The recent renovation of the children’s play park of Plaza Castellet in Cala Rajada (Capdepera) offered comprehensive renovations that are adapted for children with disabilities.

Along with the replacement of the concrete surface with a rubber material as well as the elimination of obstacles, there are now hree new pieces of playground equipment especially designed for the integration of children with disabilities: a swing, a rocking horse and a booth.

But this children's play area is not the only recent development on the infamous family holiday destination of Mallorca. The first ever golf school for the disabled has also opened recently at the Maioris Golf Course just 15 minutes west of Palma de Mallorca. With funding and constulation from the Handisports Foundation the new facilities will allow residents and tourists to take part in one of the world's favourite pastimes even where accident or illness may have left them with mobility problems.

The new facilities include a special golf buggy which can be used across the course, even on the green, without damage to the surface and which can support and safely assist players. The machine has been designed so that it can "‘tip’ players onto their feet from a sitting position when they cannot do so themselves, and is replete with sensors, control panels and head and back supports to ensure total comfort and safety."

Other equipment available includes clubs that are designed to be used with one hand for players who have lost a limb, plus the support of training sports coaches to meet the individual needs of disabled players.

The Maioris Golf Club was originally selected because it is fairly flat which is an important feature for paragolfers. We want to make as many sports as possible accessible to everyone as well as promoting Mallorca as a destination where everyone can enjoy their favourite activities on holiday – but without forgetting the people who live here, of course,” Handisport’s founder explains.

Mallorca has always been a popular holiday spot and these new facilities are only adding to the appeal of this wonderful island!
