After the recent outcry and backlash against the treatment of escaped chimpanzees Adam and Eve, animal cruelty is at the forefront of people's minds in Mallorca.

The investigation is being carried out by Seprona agents (Service Protection of Nature) of the Civil Guard after a complaint was filed against the owner of a pair of lions on an estate of Son Servera.

Several residents of the area reported that the animals, living a mere 200 metres from the centre of an inhabited small town, were living inside a metal trailer "in very poor condition".

Aside from the issues of animal cruelty where the animals are kept all day in the sun and in unhygienic conditions, with no shelter against adverse weather conditions, there is also concern over the security measures as the cage is locked only with a small padlock.
