Esporles town council has just announced that they will be the first municipality in Mallorca to employ exclusively green electricity on all their public facilities, including street lighting.

With this initiative, the small village of Esporles located in the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, continues its quest to be one of the most environmentally friendly towns in Spain. A few years ago they established a new rubbish collection tax which raises according to the amount of non-recyclable residues generated by each household. This has increased the percentage of recyclable refuse from 23.6% to 76.1%.

Currently, only a 3% of the energy consumed in the island comes from renewable sources, even if the regional government has put in motion a project to use mostly green electricity in all public buildings in the Balearics.
