If you are in Mallorca this weekend, you might notice how the island is gearing up for one of its biggest fiestas of the year. Each June, the locals get together to celebrate in honour of Sant Joan (John the Baptist).
There is an abundance of traditional fiestas and fairs in Mallorca. Whatever the time of year you find yourself on this island, there is always something going on. From religious celebrations dating back to ancient times to traditional Mallorcan fairs, each month there is something to look forward to.
Happy New Year, the Three Kings have made their journey to all Majorcan homes. They started with their arrival by boat in the Port of Soller where they were met by hundreds of local children waiting for the sweets and smiles from the Kings and their pages. They knew that this was just the start and that overnight the presents would arrive, delivered by the Kings on camels or donkeys.
Last week we saw opening parties for Hed Kandi, Mallorca Rocks and Nikki Beach this week we have plenty more to look forward to with Superclub openings, garden parties, more festivals and walks with both guides and the undead.
The joys of February in the Soller valley must be experienced. The blossom is appearing on the trees, and the orchards are a mass of pink and white. The grass has been overtaken by yellow sorrel, providing a carpet for the blossom. This truly is a special time of year and an early indication that spring in Majorca comes sooner than in England.
As most kids head back to school, it might feel like summer is over for some but it definitely isn’t over in Mallorca. In fact, September is a popular month for people visiting the island thanks to cheaper flights, glorious weather and the wonderfully warm sea.
Following last year’s success, the Port Adriano Street Food Festival once again brought thousands of people to the prestigious port over Easter weekend. Locals and tourists alike flocked to the port to sample the mouth-watering food on offer.
Llubi is a small, unassuming town in the plains of the Pla, to the east of the Tramuntana mountain range. Out of all the many food festivals that are held on Mallorca throughout the year, The Frenchman and I were most eagerly awaiting the Tapalma tapas festival (7-11th October 2010). I mean, seriously, who wouldn’t want to crawl round dozens of Palma’s bars and restaurants, eat their best tapas at bargain prices, and wash it all down with lashings of discounted beer and wine? It sounded like the grown-up version of a student pub crawl.
Extreme by name, extreme by nature. The race up and down Puig Massanella from the picturesque village of Mancor de la Vall is considered by many to be the toughest race in the Cursa de Muntanya race series. This year’s race was made all the more difficult because local landlords would not allow runners to cross their land on the return from the peak.
The Firo Soller is one of the most exciting festivals in Mallorca. The battle between the Moors and Christians is loud exciting and a full of colour in the way only a Spanish festival can be.
Mood Beach Bar and Restaurant celebrated its 9th anniversary with a lavish party on Friday. Guests were greeted by sexy angels on horseback and treated to tasty blue Hawaiian cocktails in flutes rimmed with coconut flakes.
Most towns on the island have their own Carnival over the weekend, with the largest parties to be found in Palma where the main events are the Rueta (children) and Rua (adults) parades. So do as the locals do, and pick your costume for an unforgettable weekend that both children and adults will enjoy.
August 20th to 24th 2010 sees Soller celebrate its patron Saints day in honour of Saint Bartholomew. The cathedral-like church that dominates the town square is named in his honour and the five-day celebrations take place in front of the church and in the town hall square.
Mallorca’s fun-seekers, foodies and fashionistas gather at Nikki Beach’s world-famous champagne brunch every Sunday. This brunch bonanza is an all-you-can-eat feast with two hours’ worth of unlimited champagne.
More than 400 people took part in Port Adriano’s Sunset Yoga hosted by renowned yogi Xuan Lan and swimmer Gemma Mengual at the weekend!
This is Soller’s weekend of the ‘Apropa’t A L’Art’. Literally translated means ‘come to the art’ and it is the three days of the year when art, music and poetry are honoured in our town. On the 6th, 7th & 8th August from 6 pm onwards, many of our fine buildings are open to the public to view the paintings and participate in the music and poetry – it’s like a mini Eisteddfod here.
