Super Yacht Public Opening 2014
Getting a close up look at some of the best super yachts in the world
The Superyacht Cup opened its docks to the public this year. I went down to take a look and quickly realised what a different world it is…
This is one of the most glamourous and wealth-heavy sports events of the Mediterranean summer. The Superyacht Cup takes over the famous STP docks of Palma for 5 days a year. Luring to the city the largest, fastest and most expensive sail super yachts in the world.
On Saturday morning the public (the ‘average Jo’) and the boat fanatics, got to take a closer look.
On entry to STP, your neck cranes skywards to the top of the yacht masts supporting the bulky booms and house size sails. Below, the decks shine with beauty, charm and busy crews. Not being a sailor I can’t appreciate what the crew are undertaking, but there’s a lot of purposeful heave hoe.
Each yacht has a unique streamline design, some more modern than others. The colours uniform the majority: dark navy blues; crystalline whites; mahogany browns; gleaming chromes. The exception being a lime green beauty, the deck topped with hot pink cushions.
On some decks, it appears the owners were having breakfast. Not a bad spot to have breakafst it has to be said! Dockside a lot of the crews were watching the rugby – New Zealand Vs England; a sea of white polo shirts fills the temporary bar where you could grab a much needed cold bottle of water.
The Cup brings with it exclusive events, dinners and parties. Unless you know your ‘port’ from your ‘starboard’ you won’t get an invite. However, no matter what your taste, getting up close to these majestic Ladies is well worth the trip.
Coincide your trip to Palma for a rare glimpse at how the ‘other half’ live, it’s a world apart..
