The environmentalist group GOB (Grup Balear d'Ornitología i Defensa de la Naturalesa - Balearic Group for Ornithology and Natural Protection) have launched a campaign to emphasise the importance on protecting the natural beauty of Mallorca. The "Blackout Mallorca" campaign was launched ahead of the World's main tourism fair, the ITB Berlin which began yesterday.

The 'Blackout Mallorca' campaign stands against the policies that the Partido Popular Government have announced, allowing construction to take place on land that should be protected. The Government have said these policies are meant to produce jobs for the local communities to get the economy moving again.

Some of the main constructions that the GOB and other environmentalists are against are the construction of a shopping complex in Ses Fontanelles near Palma on Mallorca's last remaining wetlands, and also the urbanisation of areas of the Serra Tramuntana. This, combined with the import and incineration of waste from the mainland and relaxed protection of natural parks such as S'Albufera will potentially irrepairably damage Mallorca's natural beauty.

The campaign has gained support from Mallorcan aritst Miquel Barceló of Felanitx,in the East of Mallorca. Barceló has produced a video showing Mallorca covered in drops of black paint which represent the destruction that could happen here.

More information on the campaign can be found on the Blackout Mallorca website (which is in Spanish but you can change the lanuage on the top right of the page).
