Cold snap brings snow to Mallorca

Tramuntana mountains are snowcapped after heavy snow on Sunday night

Sun, sand and... snow? Not the usual weather you would associate with Mallorca but due to a cold northerly wind, temperatures dropped significantly during the weekend and cold days are set to continue until the end of the week.

Heavy snow has fallen in the Tramuntana mountains resulting in road closures, limiting access to Lluc where snowfall was the heaviest. Roads towards the north west of the Tramuntana mountains between Fornalutx, in the middle of the mountain range, and Pollenca were closed yesterday morning as heavy snow fell at around 200 metres above sea level. Snow was also seen in Valldemosa and Orient.

However, the promise of snowfall in Palma never came to light - there was not a flake to be seen on lower ground despite lows of 0 to 2 degrees and highs of around 8 or 9. Usually the Tramuntana mountains will catch a bit of snow each year but very rarely does it snow in the towns or cities to the east of this range.
