Cold snap heading for Mallorca
Parts of Majorca are on a severe weather alert today, as the cold snap that has already claimed lives in eastern and southern Europe spreads to other parts of the continent. The north and north east of the island are to be hit with snow and high winds, according to the meteorological office (AEMET).
Temperatures are set to drop one or two degrees below zero and much lower at altitude (-12°C at 1,500m). Tomorrow will be particularly cold, with temperatures not expected to start rising until Tuesday. If the forecast is correct, this spell could go down in Mallorca’s history as the coldest since 1956. Snowfall is anticipated as low as sea level, according to some reports.
Strong winds up to 100kmph are expected and rough seas with waves up to 4 metres high off the north coast. Drivers have been warned to exercise caution and hikers advised to avoid venturing into the mountains.
