Cold snap stretches to Mallorca

featured in News & reviews Author Nicola Henderson, Site Editor Updated

Mallorca has received a covering of snow on it's higher peaks as cold northerly winds swept over the island last night. The mountainous region of the Serra de Tramuntana was worst hit, with the MA-10 road being closed between Coll de Sa Batalla and the Mirador de Ses Barques. The chill is set to continue into tomorrow, where the snow line could drop as low as 200 metres!

Temperatures are expected to drop towards freezing and gale force north winds will be buffeting Majorca, especially in the north east. Winds of 107 kph have been recorded in Capdepera. Ferries between the islands and the Spanish mainland may face disruption caused by heavy seas.

The storm is expected to pass on Friday, ushering in warmer and more seasonal weather for the weekend, although there will continue to be rain showers and strong winds on Friday and Saturday.
